For example, in 2019, an AI trained on Schubert\u2019s music\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/schubert\/unfinished-symphony-completed-by-ai\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/schubert\/unfinished-symphony-completed-by-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/schubert\/unfinished-symphony-completed-by-ai\/\" aria-label=\"completed his Unfinished Symphony\">completed his Unfinished Symphony<\/a>\u00a0and last October the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn performed an AI-generated version of\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/ai-beethovens-symphony\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/ai-beethovens-symphony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/ai-beethovens-symphony\/\" aria-label=\"Beethoven\u2019s last symphony\">Beethoven\u2019s last symphony<\/a>.<\/p><p>But what are the limits of AI music? Can an AI really be considered creative? The\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.stms-lab.fr\/article\/detail\/erc-advanced-grant-awarded-to-gerard-assayag\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stms-lab.fr\/article\/detail\/erc-advanced-grant-awarded-to-gerard-assayag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.stms-lab.fr\/article\/detail\/erc-advanced-grant-awarded-to-gerard-assayag\/\" aria-label=\"REACH\">REACH<\/a>\u00a0(Raising Co-creativity in Cyber-Human Musicianship) study is led by Gerard Assayag of\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.ircam.fr\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ircam.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ircam.fr\/\" aria-label=\"IRCAM\">IRCAM<\/a>\u00a0(France) who recently received funding from the European Research Council for this project.\u00a0<\/p><div class=\"article-body-container show-iframes\"><div class=\"article-body fs-article fs-responsive-text current-article\"><p>One part of the study involves\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/inventing-improvisational-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/inventing-improvisational-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/inventing-improvisational-ai\" aria-label=\"teaching AI how to improvise\">teaching AI how to improvise<\/a>, and find out if it can be used for example in live performance with (human) musicians.\u00a0<\/p><p>AI isn\u2019t often used in live collaborations. Often, as was the case with the Schubert symphony, a human curator will select the best outputs that the AI created. It\u2019s possible for humans and AI to take the stage together, but it requires a lot of trust in the AI: the musicians need to be confident that what the algorithm creates is something they can work with.<\/p><p>In 2019, rapper Reeps One held a\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q981cTdL0_Y\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q981cTdL0_Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q981cTdL0_Y\" aria-label=\"rap battle\">rap battle<\/a>\u00a0against an AI called Second Self. In a\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/inventing-improvisational-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/inventing-improvisational-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/inventing-improvisational-ai\" aria-label=\"statement to UCSD\">statement to UCSD<\/a>, researcher Schlomo Dubnov says that such an AI \u201cneeds to be able to analyze what\u2019s happening and decide when it\u2019s going to improvise with its human partners and when it\u2019s going to improvise on its own. It needs agency.\u201d<\/p><p>Figuring out how to improvise with an AI is just one part of the project. At the same time, other research teams involved in the\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"http:\/\/repmus.ircam.fr\/reach\" href=\"http:\/\/repmus.ircam.fr\/reach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:http:\/\/repmus.ircam.fr\/reach\" aria-label=\"study\">study<\/a>\u00a0will be looking at how humans and AI interact, and what it means for an AI to be part of a creative collaboration.<\/p><p>With the research only just\u00a0 receiving funding, it may be a few years until we learn more about creativity in AI, but along the way we should start to see musicians experimenting more with AI.
